3 Ways to Waste-Proof Your Food

December 15, 2023

Healthy, delicious food in the fridge? Love it. Healthy, delicious food in the trash? Huge bummer. It happens to the best of us, so no sweat—but if you’re tired of tossing food that’s past its prime, try these simple strategies to avoid food waste.

  1. Jot down the date. If you find yourself racking your brain to remember when on earth you made that pasta, save yourself the guessing game and label leftovers with the date you cooked them. So much easier (and more reliable) than the sniff test.

  1. Out of sight, out of mind. Avoid forgotten ingredients by rearranging your fridge to remind yourself what groceries you’re working with. Just place the items in your fridge that need to be used up sooner near the front where you'll see 'em right when you open the door.

  1. Reimagine extra ingredients. Got some leftover ingredients after making a Hungryroot recipe? Consult The Cookbook to see how you can work them into another recipe, or ask your fellow Hungryrooters in our Official Community Group how they get creative with extra food.
